Meeting on the Adoption of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) for the Manufacturing Sector

EUROCHAM Malaysia CEO, Mr. Sven Schneider and the team attended the second discussion on the adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) for the manufacturing sector, organised and chaired by YBhg Dato’ Sri Norazman Ayob, Deputy Secretary General, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI)  on January 12, 2023.

The meeting is a continuation of the discussions that occurred on September 6, 2022, focused on the adoption of an ESG framework. This is in line with the Government’s target to become a net-zero carbon emission by 2050 under the 12th Malaysian Plan.

The discussion highlighted the importance of the manufacturing sector in achieving such targets as the sector is a major contributor to the country’s economic growth and development as well as Malaysia’s export earnings. Furthermore, it also focused on the eleven guidelines provided by Bursa which companies have to comply with, most especially when it comes to their Sustainability Reporting. The Ministry emphasised the importance of ESG compliance in the further development and growth of the country, especially when it comes to trading with other nations that adhere to stringent ESG standards and regulations.

Green and energy transition among priorities of Sweden as EU council president

On Jan 1, 2023, Sweden assumed the role of Council of the European Union president.

The council presidency rotates among EU member states every six months, much like Asean where the chairmanship rotates every one year, and Indonesia has just assumed the chair for this year.

Having Sweden as the EU council president of the EU Council coincides with an upswing in the relationship between the EU and Malaysia.

Trade and investments are picking up, people-to-people relations are starting anew as countries have been opening up after the pandemic.

On Dec 14, last year, the EU and Malaysia signed a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement that will serve as a springboard for expanded relations in the years to come.
