IGEM 2023 Opening Ceremony & Special Forum on Technology and Innovation: Energising the Hydrogen Economy

EUROCHAM Malaysia received an esteemed invitation to attend the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 5th October 2023. IGEM 2023 stands as a pivotal event to accelerate the region's net zero and energy transition goals and it showcases Malaysia's commitment to sustainability and global collaboration. This year's event promises to surpass past achievements and attract a diverse audience from around the world.

A day of insights unfolded as we were treated to an insightful speech by the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof who has emphasized HETR's potential for significant revenue generation, GDP boost, and job creation. This launch was a highlight of the 14th International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2023 themed “Race Towards Net Zero: Leadership for Climate Action."

This launch has secured Malaysia’s initiatives to advance in the energy transition with the launch of Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR), propelling the nation to a regional leader in renewable energy. HETR is expected to unlock RM824 billion worth of opportunities in the global green hydrogen market by 2050.  Additionally, Malaysia is actively working towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 through various initiatives and legislative advancements.

EUROCHAM Malaysia also participated in a significant forum hosted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) for the official launch of the hydrogen economy and technology roadmap. The forum included insightful discussions moderated by Mdm Hazami Habib and featured esteemed panellists: YBhg. Datuk Ts. Dr. Mohd Nor Azman Hassan, Dr Leon Rosario, Mr Colin Patrick, and Mr Emanuele Bianco.

Key topics encompassed the elements of the HETR roadmap, Malaysia's positioning and capabilities in the global hydrogen economy landscape, approaches to hydrogen technology development in Malaysia, historical development, ASEAN countries' initiatives in the hydrogen economy (Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand), and a call to action for mindset change and ecosystem development through upskilling talents in Malaysia for hydrogen technologies.
