Malaysians can expect good news for the country's 5G network implementation in tomorrow's 2024 Budget tabling, says Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the ministry had been working on special packages that could help more people to take advantage of the 5G network technology.
"There are various matters that the 2024 Budget will touch on. Specifically for the Communications and Digital Ministry, we hope there will be good news for the 5G implementation.
"As for other sectors and ministries, the government will look into issues such as cost of living, food supply chain, and food security such as the rice issue, for example," he said in a press conference after launching Malaysia's First 5G Autonomous Warehouse event at DHL Supply Chain, here.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said the government was also looking into the possibility of the Omnibus Data Act to coordinate government agencies and ministries in data management.
He said this in response to a question on why Malaysia has yet to implement the Data Protection Act.
"That (Omnibus Data Act) will come later. As of now, the Personal Data Protection Act is more towards regulating commercial transactions on the private side which we are reviewing several details at the moment.
"For government, whether federal or state government, we will hope that (data management) will be (regulated) through the Omnibus Act later on."
In June, Fahmi said the government was looking into amending new data and cybersecurity laws to turn Malaysia into the digital hub of Asia.
He said this would include amending the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and scrutinising the new Omnibus Bill, to strengthen Malaysia's digital policies.
He added that the improved legislation as well as creating one protocol on data sharing and data sovereignty in Asean would complete the digital ecosystem not just in Malaysia, but in Southeast Asia as well.
