Official Launch of the Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LuMIC) Masterplan: Shaping Perak’s Future Through Inclusive and Sustainable Development

On 10 April 2025, EUROCHAM Malaysia proudly co-hosted the official presentation of the Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LuMIC) Masterplan, in collaboration with the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) and Port of Antwerp-Bruges International (PoABI).

The event opened with inspiring presentations by H.E. Rafael Daerr, Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia, and H.E. Peter Van Acker, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Malaysia, who celebrated LuMIC as the first Global Gateway project in Malaysia, with its critical first-phase feasibility study funded by the EU and launched in 2024. They underscored LuMIC’s pivotal role in deepening EU-Malaysia trade and fostering a sustainable growth partnership. The event was graced by YAB Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad, Chief Minister of Perak, who officially launched the project and revealed that LuMIC is poised to attract up to €15 billion (RM72 billion) in investments over the next 25 years, while generating more than 55,000 job opportunities for local communities.

YBhg. Datuk Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak, CEO of PKNPk, emphasised that LuMIC is not merely a port, but a dynamic maritime industrial development zone that will complement existing gateways such as Port Klang and Penang Port. Mario Lievens, Director of PoABI, followed with an insightful discussion on the strategic significance of the project, highlighting its alignment with Europe’s Global Gateway strategy and its potential to further strengthen EU-Malaysia collaboration. The presentation concluded with Dr. Johannes Schmidt, PoABI Project Manager, who elaborated on the phased development plan and outlined seven key industrial zones—including green energy, ship recycling, and maritime 3D printing—essential to LuMIC’s role in driving Malaysia’s blue economy.

EUROCHAM Malaysia was privileged to host distinguished guests, including EU Ambassadors: H.E. Ivan Velimir Starčević (Croatia), H.E. Jose Luis Pardo Cuerdo (Spain), H.E. Jacques (Jaap) Werner (Netherlands), H.E. Axel Cruau (France), and H.E. Krzysztof Dariusz Dobrowolski (Poland), along with EUROCHAM Malaysia CEO Karl Godderis and Chairman Peter Lenhardt.
