Malaysia's rapid data centre and cloud investment growth has prompted a shift in policy focus from merely hosting digital infrastructure to building the applications, talent and industries that generate lasting economic value from it. This matters because infrastructure alone creates limited employment and spillover benefits, while the surrounding AI services, software and skills ecosystem is where broader job creation and higher-value economic activity actually occur. Enterprises, SMEs and researchers stand to benefit from planned efforts to widen access to affordable computing power, with a national compute marketplace expected to launch in early 2027 to help close the current gap between infrastructure availability and actual AI adoption.
