Orange Economy Has Potential To Power Growth Of Malaysia's Creative Sector, Says Fahmi

08. October 2026
The communications minister says the creative economy, already 6.8% of GDP, has room to grow further as digital distribution lets local podcasts, music, animation and games reach global audiences directly, prompting the establishment of an Orange Economy Council to coordinate the sector. This matters because the policy gap is becoming visible as the industry scales: there's no dedicated fund for individual content creators, whose income models vary widely, and the government has flagged AI-generated content built on existing artists' work and identities as an unresolved copyright issue needing intervention. Content creators, media outlets and IP holders may be affected, with the RM30 million Media Innovation Fund remaining the main funding channel for now, and copyright protections around AI-generated content still to be worked out.
