The impact of the Middle East conflict on global energy supplies is now extending beyond petrol, with higher natural gas and coal prices increasing electricity generation costs, according to Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. He said natural gas prices typically respond to changes in petrol prices with a lag of around three to four months, while electricity users consuming more than 600kWh a month are exposed to fuel cost fluctuations under the Automated Fuel Adjustment mechanism. The government was expected to consider measures to ease the impact of higher electricity bills on consumers, while recent weather conditions could also contribute to higher electricity consumption.
