Malaysia’s electricity grid is facing increasing pressure from the rapid growth of data centres alongside rising renewable energy penetration, creating new technical challenges for the energy sector. Industry experts said utilities will need to invest in transmission and distribution infrastructure, digitalisation, energy storage and greater visibility of grid-connected assets as data centres create continuous demand while renewable generation remains variable. Malaysia’s Grid System Operator is continuing a study on the flexibility required to accommodate higher levels of solar energy and electric vehicle adoption, with battery storage, demand response and solar curtailment identified as potential measures.
