Planning Cities That Last

Urban planning experts at a climate conference argued that cities are still relying on historical hazard maps rather than forward-looking climate projections, leaving infrastructure decisions underprepared for risks decades out, while also flagging a persistent gap between high-level net-zero policy and actual ground-level execution. This matters because capital for climate resilience currently flows through rigid, siloed categories that separate development funding from climate funding, making integrated neighbourhood-scale projects hard to finance, and because corporate decarbonisation efforts tend to stop at a company's own buildings rather than extending to local supply chains and communities. Developers, financiers, SMEs and municipal planners may be affected, with certification increasingly positioned as a financial instrument tied to green financing access, and real estate industry bodies already signing agreements with sustainability and carbon market groups to formalise this shift going forward.
