Concerns over the potential misuse of Malaysian ports for transshipment aimed at circumventing US tariffs have prompted calls for more targeted, evidence-based enforcement. Maritime industry observer Datuk Seri Jeyenderan Ramasamy said authorities should identify specific companies and shipments involved, while strengthening checks on documentation, cargo origins and supply-chain activity rather than placing broader scrutiny on the entire maritime sector. Greater data-driven screening and information-sharing between Customs, port operators and other agencies could help protect Malaysia’s reputation as a trading hub while minimising disruption to legitimate businesses.
