Malaysia’s approval of 66,312 new permanent positions for the Health Ministry, supported by RM6.7 billion in funding, is being viewed as a step towards addressing staffing pressures in the public healthcare system. Health experts, however, say additional recruitment alone will not resolve challenges including specialist shortages, staff burnout, underfunding and rising healthcare demand linked to an ageing population and increasing chronic diseases. They are calling for broader measures, including stronger specialist retention, expanded training pathways and greater investment in primary care and public health to strengthen the system’s long-term capacity.
