Malaysia is being advised to accelerate renewable energy deployment and strengthen grid flexibility as coal-fired power plants begin retiring from 2029, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) warning that delays could increase reliance on gas-fired generation. The report recommends scaling up renewables alongside energy storage, grid upgrades and the repurposing of retiring coal sites into clean energy hubs using existing infrastructure. With electricity demand expected to rise, particularly from data centres, the report highlights the need to align renewable energy investment with coal retirements while managing gas as a transitional fuel.
